Blackcreek Mercantile & Trading Co. Blackline Paddle Serving Board

from 175.00

A single piece of sustainably harvested white oak wood is used to create each blackline serving board.

The result is a beautiful and functional limited production object that with proper care will become a uniquely personal heirloom tool. Blackcreek Mercantile & Trading Co.’s blackline collection utilizes a natural reactive process to give them their distinctive ebony finish. A unique technique makes use of the tannic acid inherent in white oak to develop a deep, durable, food-safe dye without the use of pigments to create the black color. Over time, natural dyes allow the wood to develop a rich patina.

Reconnecting with the practice and idea of handmade goods that connect good ideas with great materials, Blackcreek Mercantile & Trading Co. seeks to explore small scale design and manufacture of goods made the old-fashioned way, one at a time in the United States.

Wash with soap and water before initial use and after each use (some color may bleed initially). Applying a food safe mineral  is essential in maintaining the blackline boards. Oiling helps keep the wood from drying out and cracking. Apply a liberal amount of oil to dry wood with a clean cloth and allow the oil to absorb into the wood overnight. Wipe off any excess oil with a clean, dry cloth or a paper towel. Wash gently with soap and water to remove any excess oil. After three applications of oil, the board will become much more resilient to normal use, and require less frequent oiling.

Highly acidic foods such as citrus and berries will affect the natural pigmentation more drastically. Avoid long periods of contact with high pH foods.
