Salter Cast Iron & Brass No. 11 Vintage Postal Scale

Salter Cast Iron & Brass No. 11 Vintage Postal Scale

145.00

A fully functional and working beautiful antique No. 11 English letter pence scale made by George Salter & Co. Ltd.

The mechanism functions according to an old design patented in January by John Silvester in 1867. The introduction of mass market spring scales helped English postal workers complete tasks more quickly when the Royal Mail introduced the Uniform Penny Post and monopolized mail delivery making it less corrupt and more available to all citizens of England.

Letters up to 24 ounces are measured in ¼ ounce increments when set on the round brass plate. The spring dial mechanism has the English pence postal rates for letters at the inside of the full circle valid in the early 1940's.
