George Jones Majolica Fish Tureen 1870


A hand painted trout lying on a bed of colorful fern leaves and reed set on top of a straw colored creel design basket tureen with lavender interior.

Stilt marks to underside of cover and tureen indicating George Jones as the manufacturer.

Since the fourteenth century, potters have been making majolica, a type of tin glazed pottery. It is the bright colors that have lured attention for hundreds of years and it is this depth of pigment that is coveted by collectors today. 

George Jones is marked as the manufacturer on the underneath with an impressed lozenge.

The condition is good with minor flaws and a small repair to the inside of the basket.
